Copper Development Association (CDA) Forms Team to Fight Women’s Cancer

April 25th, 2013

By Helen Lee, Copper Development Association, Assistant Manager, Finance and Administration

This is the 12th consecutive year my colleagues and I at CDA will participate in the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) Revlon Run/Walk for Women.

Lorraine Herzing Mills joined her colleagues during the 2005 Revlon run/walk in the rain.

The event raises money to fight cancer in women, and we have a very personal reason continue our participation. When we first started, our colleague, Lorraine Herzing Mills, CDA’s vice president, finance and administration, had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was in remission. We wanted to support Lorraine and show her how inspired we were by her strength and resolve. Lorraine had been a long-time employee at CDA, joining the association in 1977.

She worked hard, she was strong and she never gave up. Lorraine was able to participate in the 5K course with us until 2008. She joined us at the finish in Central Park one last time in 2009, but unfortunately, her cancer had come back, having spread to her bones. She was only 59 years old when she died in September 2009, and it was heart-wrenching to see her defeated by the disease.

Lorraine fought to live. Her courage inspired us to continue to help others. We’ve had full support and participation from CDA and International Copper Association (ICA) employees along with friends and family every year. Lorraine thought the EIF Revlon Run/Walk was a great way to get our organization involved in the community – and we’ve raised more than $30,000 to support cancer research, treatment, counseling and outreach programs.

We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, but there’s still a lot of work to do. If you’re in New York City on May 4, we encourage you to join us in this effort. The walk/run starts in Times Square and ends in Central Park. Lorraine was always happy and excited when we did this event and I know she’ll be smiling down on us this year too. So join us!
