Biofouling – especially of ships – has been around as long as we’ve sailed the ocean. The first reference to it came in early Greek civilization when the historian Plutarch described it impact on a ship’s speed “when weeds, ooze and filth stick upon its sides, the stroke of a ship is more obtuse and weak.” Ancient sea-faring nations such as the Carthaginians and Phoenicians (1500-300 BC) used copper plating as an anti-fouling technique.
